An October Reset Within the Day

An October Reset Within the Day

A sensory reset can happen while the day carries on. Not because everything is finished or you have made time for a pause, but within something you are already doing.

While supper cooks

By the time supper is underway, the October light is fading outside the kitchen.

There is something warm on the stove. As you lift the lid, its scent rises with the steam. Your sleeves are pushed back. Someone comes in to ask when it will be ready.

You stir, answer, turn the heat down.

There is no separate moment set aside for yourself. But there may be something you enjoy within this one. The scent of what you are making. The warmth near the stove after coming in from outside. A taste from the spoon before serving.

The evening is busy. Those small pleasures belong to it too.

When a shower fits

Some days, the only shower that fits is a quick one.

Someone is looking for something. There is a message you have not answered, a load of laundry you meant to move.

You step under the water with all of it still on your mind. For a few moments, there is warmth across your shoulders, the familiar scent of soap, water running through your hair.

You are thinking about what comes next. You can still feel what is here.

Perhaps a reset can be that small.

Somewhere to settle

Later, you sit where there is room.

A corner of the sofa. The chair beside the lamp. Somewhere to lean back while the rest of the house carries on.

A blanket is within reach. You pull it over your legs, still wearing the warm layers you put on earlier. There are things left to do, but you are sitting now.

The room does not need rearranging for this to be a comfortable place. It can be the same corner where school bags get dropped, where laundry waits to be folded, where someone will sit beside you in a minute.

For now, you are sitting down, with the blanket warm across your legs.

What fits today

In The Season in Small Things, we wrote about the familiar things that come forward as fall arrives. Here, they are part of a day already in motion.

The warmth of the shower across your shoulders. A scent rising from the stove. A blanket drawn over your legs.

Some days, you notice them. Other days, you are occupied with getting through. They are still part of the day.

An October reset does not have to be a new routine or time carved out of an already full schedule.

It might happen while you are doing something you were going to do anyway. A little comfort registers. You enjoy it for the time you have.

Something or someone needs you. You get up to see what needs doing. The day continues, with that moment in it.
